A pleasant surprise …

KT_1963

A recent purchase of 11 cricket photographs, taken at county matches played in Yorkshire in the early 1960s, contained a pleasant surprise – a photograph of my late father Kevan Tebay. He is pictured walking out to open the batting with Brian Booth for Lancashire in the Roses match played at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, on 1, 3, 4 June 1963. In Lancashire’s previous county championship match the pair had registered two century opening partnerships in a drawn match with Worcestershire at Old Trafford on 29, 30, 31 May; Booth scored 118 and 65, while my father contributed 87 and 60. Alas, my old man only scored six and four at Bramall Lane in what would turn out to be his final appearance in first-class cricket. He was released by Lancashire at the end of the 1963 season, as was Booth; my father returned to the leagues, while Booth would move to Leicestershire, where he would continue playing until 1973.

The 11 photographs purchased also included a similar image, taken at the same match, of Geoffrey Boycott and Brian Close walking out to bat after tea on the second day, in front of a Spring Bank Holiday Monday crowd of over 18,000 spectators. The match, which Yorkshire won by an innings and 110 runs, featured the maiden first-class century of Boycott, who scored 145, adding 249 for the fourth-wicket in partnership with Bryan Stott (143).

NEW PUBLICATION

United North of England XI v. Sixteen Lancashire Residents

This is the first in a series of cricketing monographs that will concentrate on significant cricket matches played in Bolton during the 19th-century. The “Grand Cricket Match” between the United North of England Eleven, captained by Roger Iddison (pictured above), and Sixteen Lancashire Residents, took place at Back-o’th’-Bank, the ground of Bolton Cricket Club. In the weeks leading up to the match various improvements had been made to the ground, and these improvements, together with fine weather and the appearance of two Regimental Bands, ensured that the event was an unqualified success. This, despite some early difficulties arising from the non appearance of several notable cricketers who had been expected to play. Notwithstanding a serious injury to one of the professional cricketers, the quality of the cricket during the three-day match was well-received by the cricket-loving patrons of Bolton. It featured as it did a century by JT Oscroft of Nottinghamshire, and three half-centuries, one of which was obtained by the host cricket club’s senior professional Will McIntyre, who also took nine wickets in the match.
